„Wechselstube“ – open!

IMG_0139webAufruf zur Kunstaktion  „Wechselstube“ – open!

(english version)

Luth. Kirchenkreises Hamburg-Ost. „Wechselstube“ open ! eröffnet die Evangelische Akademiewoche 2015. Informationen zur Akademiewoche finden Sie unter www.evangelischeakademiewoche.de.

Call to join the “Wechselstube – open!” ( “Bureau de change – open!”) art initiative

Dear fellow artists!

We are confronted with near-apocalyptic scenes of war, refugee hordes and misery that leave us feeling powerless to help. How can we artists use our pictorial language to uphold peace and justice?

Let us commit our art and our names to an initiative of social responsibility and artistic resistance!

The refugee crisis is connected to the arms exports that are shipped abroad by our country too. The metaphor that stands for this horror is the shipping container. Loaded with arms, they leave the Hamburg docks every day – 1,000 containers annually, without any substantial information reaching the public. Residential containers provide the shrunken living space of stranded human beings. Containers are modern “bureaux de change”, representing commerce and prosperity, but also inhumanity and death.

The great autumn art exhibition from 31 October to 14 September 2015 in St. Jacob’s, one of the main Hamburg churches, will therefore bear the title

“Wechselstube’ open!” (Bureau de change open!)

The ceremonial opening will take place at 7.30 p.m. 31 October 2015, the Protestant Reformation Day holiday. The church portal will serve as a container, the pews will provide gallery surfaces, the former confessional booth will become an “information asylum” for arms lobbyists – a temporary currency exchange office!

We call on all German and European artists to take part in the exhibition. Donate an original work to the initiative. You can give either paintings, sculptures or objects. Pictures should not be larger than 50 x 50 cm (without frames, please).

All guests are invited to freely select one exhibit each and take it with them without payment. Visitors are requested only to fill the resulting empty spaces with their own spontaneous thoughts, texts, sketches, collages or comments. The evidence of these exchanges will become increasingly visible throughout the exhibition area and will be documented. The guests will take the pictorial works to new sites of their own choice – thereby making new art-inspiring encounters possible outside their living rooms! Such a freely growing art network will vitalise and stir compassionate engagement. Politicians in Hamburg and Berlin will be informed of this initiative and asked to confront the causes of the refugee crisis.

The radically uncompromising nature of “Wechselstube open!” is provocative. The initiative is no drive to promote artists, no welfare campaign, no event ballyhoo by a church that is feeling its age. Instead, it is a CALL to GIVE which attains its quality by questioning rationality, ownership, income and status symbols.

The Ev.-Lutherian Academy of Hamburg and St. Jacob’s Church support the project. The spatial concept is being developed by the artists Axel Richter and Uwe Schloen with Senior Pastor Astrid Kleist. The overall responsibility is borne by KunstHaus am Schüberg, an institution of the Ev.-Lutherian Church Circle of East Hamburg. „Wechselstube“ open ! opens the Evangelische Akademiewoche 2015.
